Is a Dota 2 translator safe? How DotaChat works

By DotaChat · Reviewed

The word “translator” alone does not tell you how an application interacts with Dota 2. To evaluate one, look at what it captures, where it sends data and whether it controls input. This page explains DotaChat’s current screenshot and input translation flows so you can decide whether they fit your needs.

How screenshot translation works

The screenshot shortcut captures an image for translation. That image is sent to an online translation service for text recognition and translation, and the client displays the recognized text and Chinese result. This is not an offline feature.

Before using it, check what is visible in the capture area. Chat may contain account names, messages or unrelated information from another window. Only capture content you are comfortable sending for processing. This page does not claim that screenshots stay on your device or establish a data-retention period.

How input translation works

When you trigger the input translation shortcut, the client uses keyboard shortcuts and the clipboard to copy the focused input, sends its text for translation, then pastes the translated result back. You review the result and send the message yourself. The current implementation also attempts to restore the previous clipboard text after the operation.

Keep the intended chat input focused before triggering the shortcut. Because the feature works with the focused control, using it in another window can copy or replace that window’s selected text. Try it with a harmless draft first so you understand the behavior.

Does that mean it is VAC-approved or ban-proof?

No. A description of screenshot capture or clipboard use is not an approval from Valve. DotaChat does not present a Valve certification or promise immunity from account enforcement. We also do not use a claim about Game State Integration as evidence for these screenshot and clipboard workflows.

For Valve’s own information, consult Steam Support’s VAC documentation. Those rules and support decisions belong to Valve. A translator developer cannot guarantee the outcome for every software version, game update or combination of programs on a player’s computer.

What should I check before using a translator?

  • Download source: use the installer linked from the product’s own site and verify that it is the product you intended to install. Do not rely on a filename alone.
  • Interaction: understand whether the tool captures screenshots, reads clipboard content or sends keyboard input. These are different actions with different consequences.
  • Data handling: find out which text or images leave your computer. If you need a specific retention or deletion guarantee, ask the operator before sending sensitive content.
  • Language support: confirm both the input and output languages. DotaChat currently targets Chinese-speaking players; its screenshot result is Chinese, not English.

Can I communicate without installing a translator?

Yes. Use short messages, map pings or a small Russian phrase reference. If you mainly want teammates who share your language, start with the language preference guide. A translation tool is useful only when its actual capabilities match the problem you are trying to solve.
